Laney Abernethy opened Pilates Body Shaping in Fall 2001 and is the Director for the only Romana's Pilates certifying center in North Carolina. She has worked with a variety of clients ranging from those suffering from chronic pain to professional athletes, Olympic swimmers, dancers, members of Cirque Du Soleil, and the touring cast of The Lion King. She is a true believer that anyone can do this form of exercise and is honored to have Pilates Body Shaping serve as an official sponsor for SwimMac's Team Elite and Charlotte Ballet.
_Bernadette Donovan-Merkert, who has been studying Pilates at the 8th Street Studio since 2002, entered the Romana’s Pilates IITP in spring 2009 and was certified in fall 2010. A professor of chemistry at UNC Charlotte, she received her B.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Duke University and the University of Vermont, respectively, and subsequently held postdoctoral research fellowships at Dartmouth College and the University of Texas at Austin. Bernadette considers Pilates to be a gift as it enables her to balance the demands of being an academician and administrator while maintaining her health. Her goal as an instructor is to help to improve the quality of life for others by sharing the gift of Pilates with them.
_Cat Corchado, Upon retiring from the Air Force in 2000, Cat took her first Pilates lesson in 2005 in Boston, MA . After entering the apprentice program in 2006, she completed her certification in June 2009. Cat has been in the fitness industry over 25 years and is looking forward to meeting and training new and existing clients at Pilates Body Shaping.
Cara Waller started taking Pilates in NY, where she immediately gravitated towards its focus on the individual's needs. She then continued practicing at PBS in 2003, where, as a personal trainer, she grew more interested in becoming a Romana's certified instructor. Cara started her training in 2012 and became certified in 2013. Cara is a long distance runner who has completed 3 marathons, the last one in November 2014, owing her stamina and success to Pilates. She is a mother of two daughters. Cara has a BS in nursing and has been practicing in pediatric nursing in Charlotte for 17 years.
Kirsten Swanson completed her certification with Romana’s Pilates in November of 2015. Ms. Swanson started taking Pilates in NY while at music conservatory because she figured a strong core wouldn’t hurt. Years later, she owes an injury and pain-free career as a violist to Pilates. She is the Viola Professor at UNCC and performs regularly with the North Carolina and Charlotte Symphonies. She loves being a positive part of her client’s day by helping them gain strength, flexibility, and confidence through their Pilates practice.
